Steam Activated Carbon
What Is Steam Activated Carbon?
Steam activated carbon is a type of activated carbon produced through the physical activation of carbon-rich materials such as coconut shells, coal, or wood using high-temperature steam. This process develops a large internal surface area and a complex pore structure, making the material highly effective for adsorption and purification purposes.
How Is Steam Activated Carbon Produced?
The production of steam activated carbon involves two main stages:
-
Carbonization – The raw materials are heated in an inert environment (usually nitrogen) at temperatures between 600–900°C. This step removes volatile substances and produces a porous carbon structure known as char.
-
Activation with Steam – The char is then exposed to steam at 800–1100°C. The steam reacts with the carbon surface, further developing pores and greatly increasing surface area. This “physical activation” method is natural and chemical-free, resulting in environmentally friendly activated carbon.
Key Features and Advantages
-
High surface area – Typically between 800–1500 m²/g, ideal for adsorption of gases and impurities.
-
Chemical-free production – Steam activation avoids chemical residues, making it suitable for food and pharmaceutical applications.
-
Excellent pore distribution – A well-balanced microporous and mesoporous structure allows it to capture both large and small molecules.
-
Regenerable and reusable – Steam activated carbon can be regenerated through thermal or chemical processes, reducing waste and cost.
Applications of Steam Activated Carbon
Steam activated carbon is widely used in industrial, environmental, and consumer applications, including:
-
Air purification – Removing VOCs, odors, and toxic gases from industrial emissions or indoor air.
-
Water treatment – Eliminating chlorine, organic pollutants, and heavy metals from drinking water and wastewater.
-
Food and beverage industry – Decolorization, deodorization, and impurity removal from sugar, wine, and oils.
-
Gold recovery – Adsorbing gold cyanide complexes in mining operations.
-
Pharmaceutical and chemical industries – Used for solvent recovery, gas purification, and process filtration.
Why Choose Steam Activated Carbon?
Compared with chemically activated carbon, steam activated carbon offers a cleaner production process, higher purity, and greater environmental sustainability. It is a preferred choice in industries that demand high adsorption efficiency and low contamination risk.
